DECATUR, GA — A metro Atlanta school community is uniting to help people impacted by a recent earthquake in Colombia.

Decatur City Schools is helping collect supplies after a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck Colombia on Aug. 10.

Fifth Avenue Upper Elementary School Spanish teacher Lina Panuela has family in Cali, Colombia. She helped organize a collection of more than 800 N95 masks for first responders in her hometown.

“Seeing everyone coming together being able to help, that was beautiful,” Panuela said.

Panuela says her family is safe, but several of her friends lost their homes in the earthquake.

In a post on its Facebook page, Decatur City Schools said the F.Ave G.E.N.T.S. program launched a rapid-response drive for N95 masks for people in Colombia who needed critical supplies.

“Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of the Decatur community, the G.E.N.T.S. collected over 800 N95 masks in less than 24 hours to send to Colombia,” the school district said in the post.
