GWINNETT COUNTY, GA — Gwinnett County is asking veterans who are 100 years old or older to contact the county ahead of a special recognition planned for Veterans Day.

District 3 Commissioner Jasper Watkins came up with the idea to recognize centenarian veterans for their service and contributions.

“What I thought about was the World War II vets, this will be the last opportunity that we have for most of them to be celebrated,” Watkins said.

As part of the recognition, customized flags featuring each veteran’s photo, name, rank, branch of service and the conflict in which they served will be displayed outside the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center throughout the Veterans Day holiday week.

Watkins said it is important that the veterans and their sacrifices are recognized.

“Not to be honored for what their sacrifice provides for this country, would in my mind be a tragedy. It’ll almost be like what we did with the men coming back from Vietnam,” Watkins said.

Veterans who are 100 years old or older are asked to contact Gwinnett County to be included in the recognition.
