ATLANTA — Zoo Atlanta has announced when visitors will get their first chance to see its two new giant pandas.
Ping Ping and Fu Shuang will make their public debut on Friday, Nov. 6, in the Arthur M. Blank Panda Grove.
The pandas’ habitat underwent a $6 million renovation funded by the Robert W. Woodruff Foundation. Improvements include new pools and climbing areas inside the panda dayrooms, along with water features and a sculpture.
Ping Ping and Fu Shuang are currently going through a one-month quarantine as they adjust to their new home.
Both pandas were born in 2020 at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding. They arrived in Atlanta on Sept. 27 aboard a special FedEx flight known as the “Panda Express.”
The names of the two pandas also have individual meanings. Ping Ping means “peace,” while Fu Shuang means “double blessing.”
The pandas are in Atlanta under a 10-year loan agreement with the Chinese government. Their arrival comes after China recalled pandas from across the United States in 2024.
Outside of Zoo Atlanta, the San Diego Zoo and Smithsonian’s National Zoo in Washington, D.C., are the only other U.S. zoos with giant pandas.
Zoo Atlanta’s giant panda program dates back to 1999, when Lun Lun and Yang Yang arrived. The pair had seven offspring during their time in Atlanta.
Lun Lun and Yang Yang returned to China with their two youngest cubs in October 2024 after the zoo’s 25-year loan agreement expired.
