ATLANTA — Michael Jordan has donated more than $1 million to support the journalism program at Morehouse College.

The basketball legend’s donation helped fund a new multimedia center at the Atlanta college and will also support scholarships for students pursuing journalism.

“He supported scholarships for students who want to advance their education in the field of journalism,” Morehouse Director of Development Jennah Scott said.

Journalism has previously been offered only as a minor at Morehouse. Professor and center co-founder Mickey Harris says students previously had access to limited equipment.

“We had one camera, we had one Zoom recorder and a shotgun mic for all of our students to use for their work,” Harris said.

The new multimedia center now includes new cameras, microphones and an editing bay.

Student Joshua Bass says the additional equipment will give students more resources for their work.

“To now have all of those different things, it enriches our entire experience,” Bass said.

Jordan’s donation is part of his “Black Community Commitment” mission to support education and storytelling by young Black students.

The Morehouse Multimedia Center celebrated its grand opening Sept. 23.
