DEKALB COUNTY, GA — A positive rabies case has been reported in the metro Atlanta area on Thursday.
The health department says a dead bat has tested positive for rabies in the Echo Cliff Court area in DeKalb County.
This marks the fourth bat to test positive for rabies in DeKalb County since July.
DeKalb County leaders are reminding pet owners to make sure their pets are up to date on their rabies vaccination.
Last month, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced plans to airdrop millions of rabies vaccine doses over several states, including Georgia.
Officials say the Dalton project will cover areas in Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina and Tennessee, distributing 648,000 ORV baits by helicopter and plane.
Across metro Atlanta, multiple rabies cases have been reported, including in Lawrenceville. A dead bat found last month in the metro area and a dead cat found in May both tested positive for rabies.
The Atlanta-based Center for Disease Control and Prevention also issued a health advisory last month in an effort to inform clinicians, health departments, and the public about increases in recent animal rabies activity.
