A newly discovered snake species has been named after rock legend Slash. Scientists from the Field Museum identified the non-venomous Lielaphis slashi, commonly called Slash’s groundsnake, found in New Guinea and measuring about 28 inches. Lead researcher Sara Ruane, a lifelong Guns N’ Roses fan, cited Slash’s well-known love of reptiles as inspiration — his side project was called Slash’s Snakepit, and his blues tour was named S.E.R.P.E.N.T. Festival. “I am extremely honored and humbled to have Lielaphis slashi named after me,” Slash said. Beyond the honor, researchers emphasized a serious conservation message. “The habitats that Slash’s groundsnake is from are under threat from coffee farming and mining,” Ruane warned. Guns N’ Roses are currently on a North American tour.
