Music does not just distract from pain; it may actually rewire how the brain processes it, according to a new scientific review published in the journal PAIN Reports. The Drivers of Relief: Three core elements were found to distinctly reduce pain ratings: pleasantness, choice, and rhythm or drumming in sync with a beat. Because unpleasant sounds grab attention but fail to ease pain, researchers concluded this effect goes much deeper than simple distraction. Brain Alterations: Brain imaging showed that music influences regions tied to emotion and early-stage pain processing. Most notably in fibromyalgia patients, listening to preferred music appeared to calm a brain network tied to repetitive, self-focused thinking, shifting their brain activity closer to that of healthy volunteers.
