Big Butts Are In - And We Have Sir Mix A Lot To Thank For It

When people talk about how popular the “big booty” craze has gotten in recent years they’ll often credit iconic stars like Beyoncé, Kim Kardashian, or Nikki Minaj - but years before those divas were grabbing headlines, Sir Mix-A-Lot grabbed the attention of the entire country with his powerful anthem to the round rump - “Baby Got Back”

At the time, the preference was relegated to fans of hip-hop, but fast forward a few decades and behemoth backsides are the bomb as far as society is concerned. While this could be attributed to a maturing of societal taste, or even a fanny-fad, it is hard to deny that Sir Mix-A-Lot played one of the largest roles in bringing the plump posterior to the mainstream in a way it hadn’t been before.

When Mix released “Baby Got Back” it brought controversy along with it - even receiving a ban from rotation on MTV. Fast forward a few years, and Universal Pictures thought it was safe enough to stick into a fun audition scene in the kids movie “Sing”. Thanks Mix-A-Lot!

It’s been that kind of reflective outpouring of support that has landed “Baby Got Back” in the annals of history selling millions of copies of the track in the 90′s, and continuing to today where the video has logged more than 30 million views on Youtube.

Even the sophisticated symphony crowds can’t get enough of Sir Mix-A-Lot’s derriere ditty!

Bottom line - it’s been nearly 30 years since big booties began having their moment, and it doesn’t look like there’s an end in sight for the love affair with the round rears anytime soon. We have Seattle’s most famous hip-hop star to thank for being the first star in on it. He’s like the George Washington of great glutes...

...and that’s pretty good company to be in.
