Man rescued after getting buried neck-deep in sand-filled silo

MISSOULA, Mont. — A man buried up to his neck was rescued from a sand-filled silo Wednesday.

The Missoula Fire Department said rescuers were called around 2:30 p.m. to find the man buried beneath sand inside a 35-foot silo with just his face showing, KRTV reported.

A rescue crew used a pulley and rope system to lower a firefighter in a harness to the victim. The firefighter then used large vacuum hoses connected to public works trucks to remove sand from around the trapped man.

“There was constant concern throughout the rescue, and measures taken to keep the existing sand from inside the silo from sloughing off and burying the victim completely,” the agency said in a statement.

After more than three hours, the victim was freed. He was hoisted from the silo and taken to a hospital where he was treated and released.
