Tommy Bailey, 43, died after he got into a dispute with a man on a train in the borough of Brooklyn at about 8:45 p.m. EDT, WPIX-TV reported.

The assailant, who has not been identified, attacked Bailey in the neck with “a sharp object” and fled the scene, police told the television station.

It is unclear what led the dispute and the ensuing attack, WNBC-TV reported.

Bailey, who lived in the Canarsie neighborhood of Brooklyn, was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead, WABC-TV reported. Omari Barnett, a friend of Bailey, told WPIX the victim had two children and was working as a steamfitter.

Police said it was the sixth homicide in the New York City subway system this year, CNN reported.

In April, nearly two dozen people were injured after a gunman wearing a gas mask and a construction vest set off a smoke canister on a rush-hour subway train in Brooklyn and then opened fire, striking at least 10 people.

New York police said no arrests have been made in connection with Friday’s incident. An investigation is ongoing.
