Rick Kaufman was escorted from the courtroom by deputies after he moved through a partition toward Devaunte Lewis Hill and James Edward Cowan, WSMV-TV reported.

Hill and Cowan, both of Nashville, are accused of killing Caitlyn Marie Kaufman, 26. The nurse was traveling to work in the intensive care unit at Ascension Saint Thomas Hospital West in Nashville on Dec. 3, 2020. She was driving on Interstate 440 when someone fired multiple gunshots into her gray Mazda CX-5 SUV, killing her.

Police said Kaufman was hit with at least six rounds of bullets, WZTV reported. According to the medical examiner, Kaufman was killed within 15 seconds, the television station reported.

A medical examiner also determined that Kaufman was struck in the shoulder by a single bullet. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hill and Cowan were charged with criminal homicide, and Hill was charged with assault with bodily injury, WKRN-TV reported. The two men appeared in front of a judge for a motions hearing, WTVF reported.

The Kaufman family is from Pennsylvania, but Caitlyn Kaufman moved to Nashville after becoming a nurse, according to WSMV.
