SALEM, Ind. —

A man from Indiana accidentally shot and killed his daughter as he cleaned his handgun. 

Police said that Makayla Bowling’s father was cleaning his gun Friday night inside their Salem, Indiana, home, The Associated Press reported. He thought the weapon was unloaded but it went off. The 6-year-old was shot in the head. She was pronounced dead at a Louisville, Kentucky, hospital, where she was flown by air ambulance, The Indy Star reported

The name of Makayla’s father has not been released.

Police are investigating but don’t think there was any foul play, the AP reported.

A 4-year-old is in critical condition after accidentally shooting himself in the head with a gun he found in his mother’s purse in a Myrtle Beach hotel room, WPDE reports

Police said the boy, Isaiah, was alone at the Oceans One Resort in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on Saturday when he found the .36 caliber handgun.

Investigators said he accidentally shot himself in the head.

His parents, Heather Lyn Odom, 30, and Jeremy Jermaine Barrett, 34, of Aberdeen, were both arrested and charged with unlawful neglect of a child.

Odom and Barrett appeared in court for a bond hearing Sunday afternoon, WRAL reports.

Odom told the judge that she and Barrett had been in another room of the suite when the shooting happened.

“I just wanted to say that this was just a tragic accident, and it's something that shouldn't have happened, but it did,” Odom told Municipal Judge Clifford Welsh.

The couple is released from custody and expected back in court in September.

A 5-year-old Virginia boy is in stable condition after police say he found his mother's gun in her purse and shot himself.

According to WTKR, the Portsmouth boy's mother was driving him to the doctor Tuesday morning when he got out of his car seat and found the gun in her handbag, Virginia State Police said. The boy then shot his own wrist as they traveled along Interstate 64 in Hampton, police said.

The woman was talking on her cellphone at the time of the incident, police said.

The boy is being treated at the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters in Norfolk. 

Authorities are still deciding whether the child's mother will face any charges.
