Ugh! Biopsy Monday.

By Kaedy Kiely

I started this blog nearly 3 years ago to the day to share my breast cancer diagnosis journey, and have been thrilled to be able to blog about other stuff for most of the past two years.  Fingers crossed that continues to be the case, but I realized I wouldn't be true to this blog if I didn't share my mammogram experience yesterday.

I now get mammograms twice a year -- a normal one, then six months later a diagnostic one on the breast that had cancer.  Six months ago when I had a diagnostic, the results came back a little scketchy with teeny tiny calcifications noted in a different area from the original cancer site.  There are many reasons these calcifications could be benign but, with my history now, we can't be too careful.  I had an MRI (a dreaded procedure for me since I can't stand tight spaces) last year with good results -- it didn't pick up anything.  Yet we knew the spots were there, and my surgeon and I decided together to wait for the results of my next mammogram before doing a biopsy.

Yesterday was the six month mammogram.  As woman after woman in the waiting room was told they could dress and leave after their procedure I, alas, sat waiting for an hour reliving my experience of 3 years ago.  Difference was, THIS time I was prepared!  They finally brought me in for an ultrasound because the mammogram showed the calcifications are more pronounced now.  Bottom line, they will do a biopsy Monday morning.  I'm thankful I know so much more about this now than I did 3 years ago.  I remember the drill, and I know I can take whatever comes of this.  I, of course, am praying that it is just a blip, and that I remain strong, healthy, and cancer-free.  I am determined to remain positive whatever the outcome.  I'll keep you posted.
