All Things Southern With Emily Saliers of Indigo Girls

By Kaedy Kiely

I just LOVE the Indigo Girls!  Their lyrics and music have always touched me.  Their vocal harmonies are unmatched.  They are true gems of the south, and I am honored to have known them professionally since their early days.

Although I didn't know them in school, Emily, Amy, and I graduated from Emory University in the '80s (though I a bit before they did,) and early on in our careers we talked about our love Southern Literature.  An Emory professor who made an indelible impression on us was Dr. Floyd Watkins.  He was a crotchety older man, and 75% of his perspective students would RUN out the door after the first day of  his classes to take something -- ANYTHING -- else to satisfy their course credits rather than flunk out of one of his his courses.  His bark would weed out the folks who were too intimidated to risk a bad grade to learn from a master.  So his classes were small, and his students all knew each other and thrived in Dr. Watkins' type of learning  environment.  I had the memorable experience of traveling with one class to William Faulkner's home in Oxford, Mississippi, which contibuted to my life-long love of Faulkner's work. Emily and I have reminisced about our teacher before, and Indigo Girls' music reminds me of those Southern Lit courses I loved so well -- it reminds me of the richness and uniqueness of everything Southern.  Their music is pure and genuine.

I hadn't talked to Emily or Amy in a while, but I ran into Emily at the re-opening of her popular restaurant, "Watershed." "Watershed'" too, is uniquely Southern -- beautiful, pure, sometimes rich, sometimes simple. always delicious fare.  Check them out at their brand new location in The Brookwood at 1820 Peachtree Rd. NW, Atlanta 30309 -- you will not be disappointed in the food or in the fantastic dining room!  Hear my interview from last week with Emily here.
