I saw it on a news program the other day, then read a long article in today's AJC about a movement lobbying for a bald, "cancer" Barbie, but Mattel is not biting yet. 

As I was going through my breast cancer treatment in 2009, I got a call from the folks at Cabbage Patch headquarters (Babyland General Hospital) in Cleveland , GA asking if they could honor me by creating a Kaedy Kiely Cabbage Patch Doll to help raise money for The American Cancer Society.  I told them I'd be thrilled!  When they asked what they could do to help make the doll resemble me, I wondered if they could make her bald with a beautiful wig to represent me losing my hair during chemo.  They were quick to oblige and even went further by creating a cute little baseball cap with a half-wig inside, just like one I wore.  My doll raised a lot of money, and the raffle winner is someone I don't know who lives in NYC -- I hope it's comforting someone who is going through cancer. 

I loved playing with my Barbies when I was a kid.  In fact, my first ever Barbie had no real Barbie hair on her head.  It was painted on so she could be a blonde, brunette, or redhead, with 3 wigs that came with her.  Why not create a similar version with accessories like beautiful scarves, baseball caps with 1/2 wigs, hats, and wigs of all shapes and colors?  Barbie could also just go "au natural!" Maybe a portion of the proceeds would go to cancer research but, more importantly, perhaps little girls can be comforted knowing that even Barbie can get cancer, but she's still beautfiul Barbie -- just like their moms, their aunts, their grammas, their sisters, their friends and themselves!
