Give Me a break! Falcons Want a New Dome?!

By Kaedy Kiely

Does anybody else find this renewed talk of a new dome absurd?  I'd love to know what you think.  I've been a Falcons fan since my family moved to Atlanta in 1970.  I loved the blue Atlanta Fulton County Stadium -- I have lots of fond memories of hundreds of hours spent there watching my favorite teams and bands.  Understandably, the old stadium had to come down to make way for a brand new Olympic stadium.  The deal with that venue involved that it would become an exclusive baseball stadium.  Okay, and "the house that Deion built", The GA Dome, was built for The Falcons.  I remember the talk at the time.  Most of us Southerners were balking at the idea of a football stadium with a roof --  sure, for places where it freezes and snows, but Atlanta in the Fall and Winter needing a stadium with a roof?  What about a retractable roof?  That was too expensive.  I remember the first concert ever in the Dome.  It was U2, and I was thrilled to interview Adam Clayton backstage, and to have my new football stadium baptized by one of my favorite bands.  I remember it like it was yesterday... that's because IT PRACTICALLY WAS!  It was 1992, for heaven's sake!    Now they're at it again -- a BILLION DOLLAR stadium with retractable roof  is what The Falcons want, and to trash the barely 20-year-old GA Dome.  I understand many of the pros for it, but I find the thought of a billion dollar stadium to replace a fine one obscene in this day and age when people can't even afford to bring their families to a game.  I say, let's talk about it when the Falcons  start winning!
