The Beauty Of Bernstein At The Fox

By Kaedy Kiely

If I could have done anything for a living besides being a DJ, my wish would have been to be a performer in musicals.  Yes, this rocker also loves Broadway.  I had a ball studying music and acting as a member of The School of Performing Arts at Northside High School (now North Atlanta HS) back in 19 blah blah blah (LOL).  My family is very musical so I grew up loving to sing, and I'd pretend I was Julie Andrews as Eliza Doolittle or Maria or Mary Poppins.  I adore Julie Andrews to this day. Alas, it was only a dream.  But I had quite a few amazing experiences performing with the students at Northside.  One was being a member of the "street chorus" in Leonard Bernstein's MASS at Symphony Hall, an incredible production based on the Catholic Mass.  Jackie Kennedy commissioned Bernstein to write a piece for the opening of the Kennedy Center, and MASS was it.  What a priceless experience as a young teen to have the opportunity to work under the direction of the great conductor and famous Atlanta gem, Robert Shaw, and The School of Performing Arts' director, Billy Densmore.  It is still one of my favorite memories.  And the music!  Bernstein was brilliant! The man ROCKED it!

His most famous work, West Side Story, is at The Fox Theatre tonight through Sunday.  If you want to get lost for a few hours, revisit this magnificent show with some of the most memorable music ever. If you're seeing it for the first time, I'm jealous!  I'll never forget the first time I saw it on TV, hanging on to every moment of it.  Go to www.foxtheatre.org for seats.
