Some Grammy Love

By Kaedy Kiely

I was pleasantly surprised watching the Grammys Sunday, starting with the tribute to Aretha Franklin.  It was a terrific idea to have young female stars belt out her hits.  Although I'm not crazy about her music, I've liked Christina Aguilera for a long time -- I think she's incredibly talented.  National Anthem at the Super Bowl singer?  NO WAY!  I cringed when they announced her because I knew she was going to apply her vocal gymnastics to our beloved anthem, and I HATE that!  But a tribute to Aretha?  You go, Girl!  She nailed it!  And Jennifer Hudson is the bomb.  She looks and sounded amazing, as always.  I've heard of The Black Keys, but had never heard them before. (I've thought their name was too much like The Black Eyed Peas or Alicia Keys.)  I really liked them!  I thought they were unusual and had a great sound.  I've seen Justin Bieber plugging his movie SO much over the past several weeks but, I've decided the more I see him the more I like him.  Yes, if I were a "tween" again, I would have posters of him on my bedroom wall!  I'm now a fan of Mumford & Sons -- I want to hear more of them and know more about them -- they were phenominal!  And to have Bob Dylan come out and do "Maggie's Farm" with them and The Avett Brothers was a huge treat for me (albeit with some technical difficulties with Dylan's mic and his voice not sounding very strong.)  I had to fight hard not to berate some of my younger facebook friends for making fun of Dylan's performance.  Dylan gets a pass -- always!  With the crowd rockin' and on their feet the whole time during his tribute to the late Solomon Burke, Mick Jagger proved he's still (and always will) got it.  Streisand did too, though her '70s rich hippie chick styling was strange -- the empire waist on her dress made her look like a pregnant grandmother.  There weren't too many disappointments for me, but I didn't love Aracade Fire (won for album of the year) like I thought I would.  My nephews, whose musical tastes I trust, LOVE them.  And Rihanna needs to put some clothes on -- JEEZ!  Her bumping and grinding in her Superwoman underpants was embarrassing (okay, I know I'm sounding like a Grammy Granny now.)  Lady Gaga, who I normally enjoy watching, just did a Madonna impression.  But overall, I really felt the Grammys did the best job in a long time in bridging that generation gap of artists.  And how sweet it was to see Neil young and Jeff Beck in the audience with their wives, even though they didn't win...
