ALS -- It's Getting Personal

By Kaedy Kiely

Last year a dear, long-time friend of mine was diagnosed with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.  This happened around the same time I was having my own battle with breast cancer.  The major, devastating difference was that while I was getting better, my friend Deborah was quickly getting worse.  There is no cure for ALS.  It attacks one's nerve cells leaving them unable to walk, talk, eat and, eventually, unable to breathe.  It is an incredibly vicious disease.  Miraculously, it will never crush Deborah's spirit, though.  I smile through tears when I see her post her positive affirmations on facebook -- her grace and wisdom will always be with those who know and love her.

You can help find a cure for ALS with thousands of others next Saturday, November 6, at Centennial Olympic Park.  The 5k Walk to Defeat ALS starts at 10am -- check in's at 8:30am.  Find out more or simply donate by calling 888-636-9940, or register for the walk online at www.walktodefeatals.org.
