Pink Ribbons -- Plan to Be There Next Year!

By Kaedy Kiely

Wow, I had a really fun experience yesterday that I hope to be able to be involved with again next year.  I was the keynote speaker for the Pink Ribbons Luncheon & Fashion Show at The Ritz Carlton in Buckhead, and I was asked to be one of the breast cancer survivor models!  YIKES! Two things to be slightly freaked about.  I'm getting a bit better about it, but I am always nervous when I'm asked to speak in public.  I have no problem emceeing events -- that's fun because you're spotlighting other people and are providing the "color commentary."  It's a lot different talking on the radio, too -- you don't have hundreds of sets of eyes on you!  But when asked to give a 15 - 20 minute speech alone at a podium on a stage, although I'm honored, I tremble in my boots.  I do my best to buck up, though.  I want to do anything I can to bring more awareness to the need to find a cure for cancer! Then, when I saw the runway for the fashion show portion of the event at our rehearsal Sunday evening, I about fell over.  It took up most of the room in a huge ballroom at The Ritz. Well, needless to say, the whole event was a absolute blast.  I was surrounded by amazing, beautiful, strong women who have incredible stories of what they've survived with their breast cancer ordeals.  We all walked the runway into the arms of stunning male models who, as one of the survivors put it, looked at us like no man has looked as us before -- the guys were great!  The crowd was clapping to the cranked-up music and cheering us on.  We had our hair and make-up professionally done, and were decked out in fabulous clothes from Belk at Phipps Plaza.  (Btw, have you been to Belk lately?  They have terrific sales, and great fashions and accessories.  It's so easy to find something perfect for any occassion for every shape, size, and fashion-sense there.  I ended up purchasing my "model" outfit, I loved it so much, and the price was ridiculously affordable!)  There were real models, too, putting on an exciting fashion show, and the fashions were fun, fun, fun!  The military look is definitely IN!  I've been to plenty of charity events before, but I'd never seen quite the spread at the silent auction table as I did at this one -- great items in every price range -- something that everyone could afford to bid on.  The lunch was delicious, and the emcee was the lovely and talented Brenda Wood from 11 Alive who has got such great style herself.  I got a lot of nice compliments about my speech. I guess no one really noticed that I skipped a whole page of it when I turned my pages -- Sheesh, I did, and that got me sweating (LOL!)  I'll be sure to let you know well in advance when Pink Ribbons is coming up again next year because it was so much fun!  It benefits The Georgia Breast Cancer Coalition Fund, The Low-Cost Mammography Program of The Georgia Cancer Foundation, and The Metro Atlanta Breast Cancer Angel Fund of The Beverly Family Foundation -- everybody's a winner at this event!
