My Big Blast From The Past

Previous Posts

By Kaedy Kiely

It's not often enough that I get to relive some of the favorite memories of my youth, but I got to do it this past weekend at the Center Stage Theater.  Atlanta's premiere rock bar, Charley Magruders, had a reunion Saturday night, and my ears are still ringing.  For years, I hosted an evening or two a week there where we'd make up fun games for people to play in between band sets to keep patrons entertained.  The folks that hung out at the club at Powers Ferry Landing were too cool, so you really had to be clever and come up with something to get their attention and make them get up from their hi-tops or away from the pool tables to win CDs or concert tickets.  Magruders had a long bar down one side of the room that didn't get used as much as the main bar did during the week, so we created the game "Beer Toss" (this was pre-'96 Olympics in Atlanta and we were trying to get people geared up for them.)  We'd wipe down the bar with furniture polish, slap a radio station bumper sticker on it as the goal, and give participants a mug full of beer with the promise they could drink whatever they didn't spill as they slid their mug towards the goal trying to get closest to it without going over.  They practically lined up out the door to play beer toss.   Magruders is where Metallica came to hang out after their shows at the Omni, and where the strippers, musicians, and other bar folks came after work. "Eddie Munster" (a.k.a. Butch Patrick) hung out with us at Magruders for a while.  Gregg Allman came by to sing with the band late one night. We adopted the players from The Atlanta Knights, who'd come in after their games.  Magruders had the most bad-ass door guys and bouncers -- and they were all really softies with hearts of gold.  Great waitresses and bartenders, and a wonderful owner in Butch, Magruders is where I learned to play a decent game of pool -- it's where I watched the Braves make it into the World Series, and where I met some of my favorite people who are still my friends today.  It was back before the recession and my cancer scare, back when I tried desperately to make my long, straight hair BIG, back when getting in to my little sports car didn't hurt my knees, back when I fell for the bad boys -- back when times were more carefree and rock 'n roll really mattered. So what a true joy it was to see faces and friends I'd lost touch with over the years Saturday night!  Some of Magruders' favorite bands regrouped to play short sets of the rock 'n roll that made us love them and, I gotta tell you, these guys still look and sound great -- Panda, The Blonz, Barebac, Shyanne (yeah, that's how you spell 'em.)  About half of the crowd looked almost exactly the same as they did 15 or 20 years ago -- many had changed a lot, but after a moment of studying someone's face it would come back.  Some still looked like they had just stepped out the '80s and, somehow, I loved that.  Amazing, with such diverse backgrounds we all had Charley Magruders in common and we're still alive to remember it.  Cheers to Butch Weaver and all the folks that made Margruders the home of live rock 'n roll it was.
