A Year Ago This Month

It was March 18, 2009 when I got my cancer diagnosis.  I'll never forget the date I got the call because I was hoping I'd have the "luck of the Irish" and get a call on the 17th saying my lump was benign.  Instead, on the 18th, I heard my doctor say, "It's cancer," and my new adventure began.  It's pretty hard for me to believe that one year later my body feels pretty much back to normal after the hell it's been through.  Heck, it's been pretty much back to normal for a couple of months now!  My hair no longer looks like I cut it too short -- my eyebrows and eyelashes are back.  The swelling is almost gone -- enough so that I can tell my effected breast is smaller than the other.  The pain is almost completely gone when I sleep on (my favorite) left side.  The scars are faded.  As I think back to what I've experienced over the past year, I know that many people don't have the same story to tell.  A sweet listener who's already had one breast removed e-mailed me last week that her recent genetic testing was positive and she's not only thinking she'll lose her other breast, she now knows she needs to have her ovaries removed.  Another listener lost his wife a couple of years ago and is raising his two sons while reminding me every chance he gets to "KTS" -- Keep The Strength.  Although I know I'll be haunted by my diagnosis for the rest of my life, my blessings far outweigh what's been tough.  Today as another girlfriend is finishing up her radiation this week, I am reminded to be very, very thankful.
