Bum Knee! WTH?

By Kaedy Kiely

What is it with getting older?  If you are over 40, you must know what I mean.  Your body seems to develop its own mind.  Your brain says, "I can do this!"  Your body responds, "Nuh-uh. If you make me, you'll be sorry!"  Honestly, I feel like my 40s have been The Decade of Deterioration -- where all my younger years of "I can do anything!" came back to haunt me. So after my breast cancer last year and turning 50 in November, I knew it was time for a fresh start.  I've been so happy to have found the programs at Piedmont Wellness because they offer everything you can imagine for your body, mind, and spirit, and the programs are free for cancer patients and survivors, so it's a particularly wonderful gift at this time in my life to take advantage of! I'd been exercising with the Wellfit program and had starting doing the Gentle Yoga classes, bonding with some good, new friends all the while, when it happened.

About 7 weeks ago, suddenly and without any reason I could think of, my knee started hurting...bad.  I couldn't bend it all the way, so no more exercising till it got better. It wasn't really getting better (but was no worse) when I tweaked it again DANCING at Piedmont's "Life's a Beach" party last week.  Look, I don't dance. But what are you going to do when you've had a couple of mango margaritas and the great band starts yelling your name over the mic to come up and lead the dancing to one of my favorite Beatles songs, "I Saw Her Standing There?" I had to be a good sport.  So yesterday I'm at the knee specialist orthopedist's.  My knee is inflamed and has lots of fluid in it.  Good news is x-rays show no arthritis.  So now I've got to have an MRI to see if it's tissue damage.  They're thinking it might be a torn meniscus.  If so, surgery is very successful for it. Wheeeee!  Fingers crossed -- whoops -- don't want to sprain a finger!!
