Breaking a Sweat

Previous Posts

By Kaedy Kiely

My friend's surgery went well yesterday!  She'll get her labs back on Tuesday and find out what her next steps are -- fingers crossed she doesn't have to do radiation.

I REALLY enjoyed my time yesterday for my first "Pink" workout!  There were 10 of us exercising together -- all different ages and all at different stages in our healing from breast cancer. We worked on bikes/treadmills/ellipticals for cardio for 1/2 hour, then did weights and stretching for another half-hour.  It wasn't too strenuous, but I was definitely sweating with the routine our exercise physiologist put us through.  After the group workout on Wednesdays, there is a group session with our "Wellness Coach," Barbara Robey.  Get a circle of ladies together and there's plenty to talk about!  Without going into details (as confidentiality is important in these groups,) it is a wonderful opportunity for a woman to ask questions of her fellow survivors and share details about her experiences with reconstruction, chemo, radiation, drugs -- anything about her treatments. There is nothing better than being able to talk with someone who has been in your shoes!  With the Pink at Piedmont Program, you get a nice group of women with a variety of experiences.  I'm looking forward to more of this bonding and sweating - I really wish now that I had started doing it while I was going through radiation because I believe it would have helped me have more energy.  To register for a Pink at Piedmont 12 week session or if you know someone who would benefit from this, find out more at piedmontcancer.org
