"South Pacific" -- Classic and Beautiful at Fox

Previous Posts

By Kaedy Kiely

I am a BIG fan of musicals -- I guess you can't help it when you grew up with the music from shows like "My Fair Lady," "Bye Bye Birdie," and "Damn Yankees" playing constantly on Mom and Dad's hi-fi.  Those along with "Songs From The Railroad," (which included that gem "K-K-K-Katy," which my family liked to sing with gusto in my honor,)  comedy albums from Allan Sherman (remember "Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh"?,) Jonathan Winters, Bill Cosby and, of course, the music of Sinatra.  I digress... musicals.  I wanted to be in them ever since I saw my first movie, "Mary Poppins."  When I was 5, my whole world revolved around "The Sound of Music."  My mom even bought me the movie soundtrack and piano music book -- I still have them.  And Julie Andrews is still my hero.  (OMG, as I'm typing this, I just got a "media night" invite for April 30 to "Mary Poppins" at The Fox!!  How does that happen??)  In High School I was active in The Northside School of Performing Arts.  I got to play one of my favorite parts -- Rosie in "...Birdie."  Jasmine Guy shared the role with me.  Yes, THAT Jasmine Guy (so nice to see someone who loves theater actually make a living doing it -- she's such a wonderful talent!)  All this is leading me to Rodgers and Hammerstein's (same guys responsible for The Sound of Music music) "South Pacific."  This was an album we wore out on my grandparent's hi-fi.  I know all the music by heart, but have only seen the movie once when I was a kid.  My grandfather, Pop, LOVED Mitzi Gaynor who starred in the 1958 film version.  What a joy to see this show last night at the Fabulous Fox!   I just sat back and let the beautiful music and memories flood over me.  The players are simply terrific -- the classic songs need classical vocals, and I was blown away by how talented the singers are.   The show was revived in NYC in 2008, and it still holds up -- the music is the star.  This is one to bring your folks to.  See it this week through Sunday!
