Getting a Boost Soon

Previous Posts

By Kaedy Kiely

Yesterday after my regular radiation treatment, I got a CT scan to measure where I'll be getting the "boost" of radiation on the exact spot where the tumor was.  The first 5 weeks of my treatment, they radiate the entire breast.  The last week or so they radiate the specific spot where they found the cancer.  I think they plan to start my boost a bit earlier to give my skin a break, since it's getting a bit burned.

I've already learned I can't ask questions about any of the patients I see around me because of privacy policies, but while I was sitting in the waiting room yesterday there was a very young child wailing away in one of the treatment rooms.  Poor baby!  I started wondering how on earth you treat a small child with cancer.  I don't imagine anyone else can be in the room with him because of the radiation. You can imagine it was heart-breaking to hear.  I am thankful every day for the lovely, smiling, wonderful people who comfort and treat us at the hospital.  I know this little one I could hear was in good hands.

My friend Brooke starts radiation today!!   I am so happy for her and her family.  In her e-mails she sounds very upbeat, and she let me know her little daughters think her blue X-marks-the-spot stickers strategically placed on her are fun.  Wait'll she gets her tattoos!  Congrats, Brooke -- we're getting closer to the end of this mess, Girl!
