Spreading Sunshine

Previous Posts

By Kaedy Kiely

Last week I received a very special gift from Teresa Stephens in Juliette, GA. It is a beautiful "Sunshine Basket," chock full of individual gifts that are wrapped in tissue paper with a fun little message and a cute sticker on each.  It's very obvious how much care went into this basket.  Each package contains a sweet present -- perfect for someone who needs a lift!  The first little bundle I opened was a pretty pink pillow with "I'm A Survivor" stitched on it -- that set the tone for making me feel special.  I've opened some beautiful soap, very cool magnetic bookmarks, lip gloss, a small brightly striped tote bag, and plenty more, with still more packages to unwrap (I'm opening one a day.)  Teresa tucked a letter in the basket that reads:

" Several weeks ago my husband, Craig, was listening to your morning program on his way to work.  You mentioned the treatments you were completing for your breast cancer.  He and I both agreed to send you this 'Sunshine Basket.'  I started giving these baskets to breast cancer patients in 2008 when our niece and cousin were both diagnosed with breast cancer.  Since that time, I have been trying to supply at least one basket per week to social workers at the cancer treatment centers in the Macon area.  The gifts come from donations given by individuals, businesses, and organizations.  I normally do not have the opportunity to give baskets to patients directly.  Medical records are strictly confidential.  The social workers know who needs the baskets the most.  Many patients have no family to support or encourage them, or they have other devastating life events to confront.  This basket is yours.  Open an individual gift each day, or anytime you need extra sunshine in your life."

What a lovely surprise, and what an amazing thing to do for so many people that Teresa will never meet!  I am very blessed to have a wonderful support system, but know in my heart many people face this disease alone.  Imagine how Teresa's gift gives hope to folks who are suffering.  I want to acknowledge her here as her work has not only brightened my days, it has inspired me.  Thank you, Teresa!
