5.15.09 My Chemo Sabes

By Kaedy Kiely

My friend Dave dubbed us "Chemo Sabes," and I love it -- so anyone traveling through my chemo journey with me will be referred to as such.

For our wig-trying-on-escapade yesterday, my Chemo Sabes Susan and Kathy went with me to a great boutique at Northside Hospital called "A Woman's Place."  It has everything to make a girl's cancer experience a little brighter.  Beth and Vickie spent well over an hour with us explaining the differences in synthetic and human hair wigs.  It's not so much the hair on the wig, it's more about the cap UNDER the hair and how that feels - if it's not comfortable, you won't want to wear it.  Since it was hard for me to tell how the caps felt with all of my real hair piled up under it, I trusted the ladies to pick out the  best one for me.  What is very cool is that Vickie will dye and cut the hair to match my naturally golden locks... (ah-hem!)  It's a nice bonus that my insurance will pay for my "hair prosthesis!"

I've never worn a wig so, of course, we got a big kick out of how ridiculous they looked on my head with all the different colors, no bangs and no style yet.  We've named the one picked out for me "Nor-man" because, if I were wearing a shawl and Granny-gown, I'd look like Norman Bates disguised as his mother in "Psycho."  Hopefully the styling will fix that!

My Chemo Sabes Mom and brother Mark (who's flying in from NYC for the day just to be with me - thank you Airtran!) will be with me for my first round of chemo today in T-minus-4-hours.   My session should last about 2 hours - a relatively short time compared to others I've heard about.  I'll then be attending a benefit my wonderful "Project Wednesday" friends are hosting in my honor tonight at The Ansley Park Playhouse.  It's a performance of the hilarious new comedy "A Sunday Afternoon at Loehmann's," with all the proceeds going to the Georgia Breast Cancer Coalition Fund for cancer research.  The benefit is SOLD OUT so, if you'll be there tonight, thank you!!  Tomorrow morning, I'll be at Butler Tire in Alpharetta for some great deals for you if you're in the area - go to butlertire.com for direction.

Please add your comments to this blog.  You won't see your post immediately - it has to be approved first.  The opportunity to share information with others on this site may save someone's life - you never know!  At the very least, it may cause someone to chuckle...
