I am so happy to have had my last chemo treatment! I must say, for several reasons, chemo therapy hasn't been as bad as I imagined it would be. Don't get me wrong -- it's no walk in the park. But, thankfully, I've been able to manage it fairly well. I think a few key things that are helping me get through it are drinking LOTS of water, religiously keeping up with my vitamins and supplements (of course, you need to let your doc know everything you are taking because some supplements could interact negatively with the chemo drugs,) and taking it eeeaaasssyyy. My lifestyle makes it simple for me to take care of myself -- I know it's another story for folks who are raising families or who work full days, but I truly believe you've GOT to give into what your body is telling you it needs. I also certainly have to credit my faith, and my protective support system of wonderful friends, family, co-workers, and listeners for helping me get through chemo, probably the toughest phase of my treatment.
I had a 3 month follow-up with my surgeon yesterday to check on the results of my lumpectomy. I have two scars -- one small one just below my armpit where a few lymph nodes were removed to make sure the cancer hadn't spread (it hadn't, thank God,) and another long one below that where the lump was removed. Eventually they'll be barely noticeable. I got a glowing report that I am healing perfectly! I also got my final Neulasta shot from my oncologist yesterday -- the shot that makes sure my white blood cell count stays where it should.
I meet with my radiologist for the first time this morning. I've been cleared by my oncologist to go to Boston to see McCartney at Fenway Park Aug. 5th and 6th, though! That'll be my BIG celebration before I start radiation.
