Look Good...Feel Better

Previous Posts

By Kaedy Kiely

When I first learned I would have to have chemo, several people tried to make me feel better saying they knew someone who didn't lose their hair with chemo.  Something I didn't understand at the time is that different kinds of cancer require different kinds of chemo, and with breast cancer chemos virtually everyone loses most of their hair -- ok, there are exceptions to every rule but, really, don't count on it with this one!  I was also told I'd most likely lose my eyebrows and eyelashes but, I'm happy to say, that hasn't been quite true.  I JUST realized, after my 3rd round of chemo, that they are thinning but are not nearly gone.  There's still plenty of time for them to go (I still have one more round of chemo in 2 weeks,) but it's been pretty easy for me to keep up my regular make-up routine so far.

About a month ago, in anticipation of complexion changes and brow and lash loss, I went to a very cool 2 hour course offered FREE by The American Cancer Society, Personal Care Products Council Foundation, and the National Cosmetology Assoc.  It's called Look Good...Feel Better (www.lookgoodfeelbetter.org), and is a fun, bonding time with other women sharing our crazy cancer experiences.  Vikki, the great gal who colored, cut, and styled Bridgette, hosted the class of about 10 women I attended with near Northside Hospital.  Not only do you get a demonstration full of good tips on how to apply make-up to look your best when you're not feeling well, but you get a nice bag full of make-up and skin care goodies taylored for your specific complexion (well over $200 worth) that you get to take home with you!  And these are not off-beat brand, samples of make-up -- they are the brands you love in all their full-sized glory!  Chanel, Clinique, Estee Lauder, Avon, Mary Kay, Aveda, Physicians Formula, OPI, MAC -- powders, lipsticks, eye shadow, liner, concealer, mascara, cleanser, lotion -- everything you need!  Another important thing to know when you're undergoing chemo is that, since you're so susceptible to infection, you need to change to fresh, new make-up, and be very careful about keeping it clean.  The Look Good...Feel Better experience is something I think any cancer patient will learn something from. It's also a unique opportunity to share information with other women!  If you are near Piedmont or Northside Hospitals, you'll find the info you need on this and other great free programs at their Breast Care Centers.
