Like A Sorority Without The Mean Girls

By Kaedy Kiely

I had a check-up with my dentist, Dr. Hallman, and it was the first time I've seen him and his staff since I've had my surgery and started my treatments (see my blog archives and "What Not To Do When You Find A Lump" for more.)  Laura kicked it with the teeth cleaning, and Dr. H gave me a clean bill of oral health.  This is especially good news because chemo therapy can do a number on your mouth if you don't keep up with your dental hygiene.  I've been a flossing nut for many years, so it was relatively easy for me.  Lauren, Dr. Hallman's assistant, has been keeping up with my blog and asked me about the mold I had mentioned they were making of me for radiation.  I thought it was going to be a mold of my breast, but it isn't.  It's a mold of the back of my head, neck and arms to cradle me and help position me correctly on the table.  It certainly helps make the process more comfortable -- pretty cool!

Thanks to Sharon H for providing me with some feedback about radiation in yesterday's blog since she has been through it!  I've gotten SO much support from women who have gone before me in this adventure that it's kind of like being in a sorority -- without the mean girls!  When women gather together in positivity, we are incredibly strong and are a wonder to behold.  And the men that support us are simply the best!  I have heard from many guys who have either gone through another form of cancer, who have been close to someone who has been through this, or from men who just care.  Living through a trauma like cancer can really open your eyes to the goodness in the people who are quick to surround you with their protection -- it's one part of this experience that I am deeply thankful for!
