The graves of Duane Allman and Berry Oakley in Rose Hill Cemetery in Macon. Duane Allman died in a motorcycle wreck in 1971. Berry Oakley died in a motorcyle wreck in 1972.

Gerry Rafferty (April 16, 1947 - Jan. 4, 2011): A member of the Stealers Wheel band, Rafferty produced several hits, most notably "Stuck in the Middle with You." As a solo artist he produced several hit songs, including "Baker Street", his most popular. Rafferty, who battled with alcoholism, died of liver failure.

Michael Stipe of R.E.M. is born (1960).

Rolling Stone Magazine announces that Lamar Williams has been hired by the Allman Brothers Band to replace Berry Oakley who had died in a motorcycle crash the previous year (1973).

The Fender guitar company is bought by CBS for $13 million (1965).

The Jimi Hendrix Experience plays the first of what would soon become over 240 concerts in this year when they perform at the Bromel Club in Bromley (1967).

The Doors release their self-titled debut album (1967).

The University of California, Los Angeles announces that any student getting a music degree would have to study  up on the music of The Rolling Stones, stating that they band had made such an important contribution to modern music (1968).

UK music weekly Disc and Music Echo report that The Beatles are to release five new albums, one being their first ever live album (1969).

The Beatles re-record vocals and a new guitar solo on the Paul McCartney song “Let It Be” without John Lennon at Studio Two, EMI Studios in London (1970).

Bruce Springsteen perform three nights at Joes’ place in Cambridge, Massachusetts (1974).

Elton John has a two week run at #1 in the US singles chart with his cover of The Beatles’ song “Lucy In the Sky with Diamonds” (1975).

Gerry Rafferty (“Stuck in the Middle with You” and “Baker Street”)dies at the age of 63 after a long illness (2010).

The house that Johnny Cash lived in for 35 years is bought by Bee Gees singer Barry Gibb. Gibb had planned to preserve the house to honor Cash’s memory, but just a year later the house burned to the ground after a flammable spray sealer caused a fire to break out during construction (2006).

Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin is voted the Greatest Voice in Rock by listeners of the UK radio station Planet Rock, beating Freddie Mercury (Queen), Paul Rodgers (Free) and Ian Gillan (Deep Purple) (2009).
