Sonny Bono launched his political career by serving as the mayor of Palm Springs from 1988 to 1992. Bono was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1994 as a member of the Republican party. He served until his untimely death in 1998 from a skiing accident. His wife finished out his term.
