Allan Gurganus’ first book in a decade, "Local Souls: Novellas," returns to Falls, N.C., with three linked novellas that chart adultery, obsession and incest in the New South. Gurganus finds new pathos in old tensions between marriage and eros, with gigantic hopes battling small-town conventions. Gurganus, winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize and a Guggenheim Fellowship, has written four other works of fiction, whose adaptations have earned him four Emmys. Gurganus lives in North Carolina.
