Author Susan P. Mattern, professor of history at the University of Georgia, tells the story of Galen of Pergamum (A.D. 129 to ca. 216) in her latest book "The Prince of Medicine: Galen in the Roman Empire." Pergamum began his career tending to wounded gladiators in provincial Asia Minor. Later in life he achieved great distinction as one of a small circle of court physicians to the family of Emperor Marcus Aurelius, at the very heart of Roman society. This book offers the first authoritative biography in English of this audacious and influential figure. Mattern will discuss and sign copies of the book at this event.
