About the Films:
"Hallelujah" (1929) King Vidor's 1929 film begins in a juke joint, where sharecropper Zeke falls for a beautiful dancer, Chick, but she's only setting him up for a rigged craps game. He loses $100, the money he got for the sale of his family's entire cotton crop. His brother Spunk is mortally wounded in the shoot-out which follows. Zeke goes away but returns as Brother Zekiel the preacher. His forceful preaching draws the faithful in large numbers. Even Chick wants to be saved. Zekiel has asked the pretty Missy Rose to marry him, but Chick can still cast a spell over the preacher. Starring Daniel L. Haynes, Nina Mae McKinney, William Fontaine, Victoria Spivey.
Showtime: 3:00 PM
"Broken Strings" (1940) Arthur Williams is a well-known violinist but he has an accident that injures his left-hand fingers and he can no longer play. Being a devotee of the classics, swing music grates his ears. His son, William, also has the soul of a true artist, and while he does well on classical music, his heart is into swing. Needing money, William, enters a contest in which he plans on playing classical music, but his violin has been tampered with by another contestant and when two of his violin strings break, he is forced to play swing. Directed by Bernard B. Ray.

About The Black Vintage Movie Series:
The Black Vintage Movie Series showcases select films from 1920 1950. Founded by Jeff Bellamy, the Black Vintage Movie Series was inspired by Jeff's father's enthusiasm for black films from the Great Depression. This era represents a time when families were more tightly structured, when going to the movies meant that men and women dressed impeccably. It was a night out on the town and people carried themselves with respect. During this time actors such as Nina Mae Mckinney, worked with very limited technical resources and musicians such as Louie Armstrong played without the benefit of sound enhancements.
We strive to present exclusively black vintage films that highlight the pioneers in film and music. Those that helped pave the way for others who now enjoy the benefits. We celebrate their pioneering spirit in opening doors for African Americans in the motion picture industry. We look forward to celebrating these achievements with you.
