Adam Vines will read new and selected works from The Coal Life. Drawing from a somewhat obscured southern history, Vines uses his poetry to explore the coal-mining camps of Alabama in the early twentieth century. Informed by a deep knowledge of Alabama labor history, The Coal Life (2012) pulls together questions of memory, labor, and ecology.  Vines is an assistant professor of English at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he is editor of Birmingham Poetry Review. He has published work in Poetry, Southwest Review, Barrow Street, 32 Poems, North American Review, Cincinnati Review, among others. His 2012 collection of poems, The Coal Life, was a finalist for the Miller Williams Poetry Prize. Vines was a Tennessee Williams Scholar at the Sewanee Writers' Conference, and during the summers, he is on staff at SWC. The Alabama State Council on the Arts has awarded him an Individual Artist Fellowship for 2013. Sposored by the Kenneth England Professorship in Southern Literature Adam Vines 0.00
