The Shouters are an African-American family of 10 performers from the Bolden community on the Southeastern coast of Georgia. Known for their ring shout — the oldest African-derived tradition surviving on the North American continent — this unique ensemble presents a fusion of call-and-response singing, polyrhythmic percussion (handclapping, foot patting with a stick beating a wooden board) and expressive dance-like shuffling circular movements, which have had a profound influence on African-American music and religious practices.
